In 2008, researchers in Canada asserted that quaternary ammonium biocides and oleamide were leaking out of certain polypropylene labware, affecting experimental results.[22] Since polypropylene is used in a wide number of food containers such as those for yogurt, Health Canada media spokesman Paul Duchesne, said the department will be reviewing the findings to determine whether steps are needed to protect consumers.[

Oleamide and related additives are also known to leach into foods and drinks that are stored in plastic, or plastic-lined, containers, especially those made of polypropylene. However, the potential health effects of that are not known, says Holt.   OleamIDE

November 2008 - Some unpleasant sources of BPA: Paper products (Z Recommends) - toilet paper - As it turns out (post-call research on my part) the source of BPA in toilet paper appears not to be that it is added deliberately to the product, but that a lot of toilet paper is made from post-consumer sources that include lots of recycled thermal printing paper (credit card receipts).

Environmental regulators consider sources like this disconcerting because endocrine-disrupting chemicals like BPA and phthalates can wreak havoc on marine ecosystems. Ultimately, it's sources like these that are the reason you probably have BPA (at extremely low concentrations) in your tap water, too.

Wet wipes? -- don''t use recycled toilet paper

June 2009 - When Studies Collide -  Rethinking the evidence on BPA (Newsweek) - found that monkeys fed 400 times the amount of BPA that the government assumes people ingest had lower levels in their blood than the average American. For BPA levels in people to be higher than in monkeys that practically gorged on the stuff, we must be ingesting way more than the FDA thinks. Where are the higher amounts coming from? In addition to hard plastic and epoxy can linings, it turns out, newspaper ink and carbonless copy paper—the stuff of credit-card receipts and all sorts of business and medical documents—contain high amounts of BPA.

Body Chemistry Plastic - Bisphenol A

April 2006 The Bisphenol-A Debate: A Suspect Chemical in Plastic Bottles and Cans (NatGeo Green Guide)

April 2007 - Bisphenol A for dinner -- again? (Environmental Working Group) - The scientist raising most of the alarm about BPA is biologist Frederick vom Saal, of the University of Missouri, who in 2005 reported that no studies financed by the chemical industry found problems with BPA. Meanwhile, almost all independent studies -- 90 per cent -- found adverse consequences. Vom Saal looked at 115 published studies concerning low doses of BPA and found that 94 of them reported significant effects in rats and mice, while 21 did not. if you consume canned soups, beans and soft drinks, organic or not, you also may be swallowing residues of a controversial chemical called bisphenol A (BPA) that can leak out of the can linings into your food.

....In recent months, we've turned to using glass and stainless steel containers, instead of plastic. We've eliminated plastic from my daughter's lunch. We've tried to stop drinking bottled water and we're attempting to buy tin cans from the few companies that don't use BPA as an internal resin, but they are in short supply.

August 2009 - Bisphenol A  (Science Watch)  summary of research - Bisphenol A (BPA) is an organic compound that is widely used in the plastics industry. Although it has been suspected of being hazardous to human health since the 1930s, only recently have serious inquiries into its safety been conducted by government and regulatory agencies, resulting in some sellers pulling products containing BPA from their shelves.

What's BPA, and do I really need a new water bottle? (HowStuffWorks)

Estrogen can alter the behavior of more than 200 genes, which control the growth and repair of nearly every organ and tissue in the body [source: Environmental Working Group]. Among other things, estrogen affects fetal development, cell structure and the onset of puberty, and your body's cells are highly sensitive to even tiny changes in estrogen levels.

Canada, for one, became the first country to officially declare BPA a toxic chemical, a decision that could lead to a partial or complete ban of its food-related use within two years. The European Union is also taking a more proactive approach, requiring companies to prove that a chemical is safe before it's cleared for the market. The U.S., on the other hand, requires proof that a chemical is not safe.

Limit your intake of canned foods or buy from makers who don't use BPA in the lining. (Eden Foods claims to use an alternative.)

Try to find out if your favorite winemaker uses vats lined with epoxy resin -- such wines can contain six times the BPA of canned foods.

January 2009 - Like a Guest That Won't Leave, BPA Lingers in the Human Body (Scientific American) - even those who had been fasting for 24 hours still had high BPA levels in their urine, using a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) survey of 1,469 adults.

Stahlhut says that it appears that the amount of BPA in the body drops relatively rapidly from four to nine hours after exposure, but then levels out. "After the nine hours or so," he says, "it stops doing what it's supposed to and the decline goes flat."

...That may explain why 93 percent of Americans carry BPA in their bodies, according to the CDC, or it could be that exposure is coming through different routes than food, such as the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes often used for water lines in modern homes.

...Some preliminary studies have shown that the chemical can persist in human fat tissue and trigger a drop in adiponectin, a hormone excreted by fat that helps control sugar levels in the blood. "This would be good news," Stahlhut says. "If BPA is part of this huge increase in obesity and diabetes, you should celebrate because, unlike PCBs, if we stop BPA exposure it will go away."

...If I go to a diner and they serve me a Coke in a polycarbonate glass, I drink from it. But I don't mess with the stuff at home," Stahlhut says. "I've been in this long enough to know that we don't know anything."

April 2009 - Food may not be sole BPA source (Globe and Mail) - This has led to speculation that people may be absorbing the chemical from such seemingly innocuous items as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) water pipes and carbonless cash-register receipts.

..."If you look at populations of people, by 15 to 20 hours [of fasting], it should be practically gone, and it's not," says Richard Stahlhut, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Rochester Medical Center in New York, who led the research team that announced the finding. "These high levels probably point to another source, and not a trivial source."

..The amounts of the synthetic chemical were extremely small - typically in parts per billion - but estrogen is active at levels in parts per trillion, a thousand times less.

Dr. Stahlhut said another possible explanation is that people are accumulating BPA in their body fat, and during fasting the chemical is released....

...He speculated the BPA may be coming from products such as PVC water pipes. People may absorb it by drinking water or by breathing in water vapour while showering.

Dr. vom Saal has also tested carbonless paper and found BPA in it, too. He said touching items such as cash-register and credit-card receipts may lead to some BPA being absorbed through the skin in much the same fashion as an estrogen patch delivers a dose of hormone.

September 2008 - Top 10 hidden sources of BPA (Chicago Tribune) - The chemical, a hormone disruptor, can leach out of products with regular use, but especially when they're heated.

Bisphenol A contamination of wastepaper, cellulose and recycled paper products (WIT) - Since both BPA and alkylphenol polyethoxylate surfactants are used in paper production the contamination of recycled paper products with these compounds can be expected.

Toilet paper, thus, was shown being an important source of xenoestrogen emissions to wastewater.

Thermal paper again is assessed as being a major source for the contamination of recycled paper products with BPA.
