One more week until I'm off to China and Taiwan for a few weeks. I haven't thought about the trip much in the past couple of weeks due to all the advance planning that has already been done. In some ways I don't consider this part of my upcoming long term travels. As I would have gone on this trip even if I was still working. Definitely looking forward to learning about some roots.

Not all discovery needs to take place so far from home though. Yesterday, while visiting a large camera store in LA, Samy's Camera , I decided to go to a museum on my list of places to visit in Los Angeles before departing. I decided on the Museum of Tolerance due to the proximity to the store. The visit comes at an interesting time - the day before 9/11. While a large part of the museum focuses on the Holocaust, there are sections devoted to the LA Riots, black slavery and equality, and other forms of racial intolerance around the world including Rwanda and Bosnia. There is also a rotating exhibit which talks about various human rights abuses - the topic that was presented to me was on child labor, child pornography, and slavery. Admittedly, I was wondering a little on how child labor and pornography fit in with the overall theme of the museum.

The most powerful section of the musem is clearly the presentation on the Holocaust. While the WW II period is covered, the discussion of the events leading up to the Holocaust is something that stands out in my mind. Overall, I would recommend this museum for anyone in the area. I believe the lessons learned on how the Holocaust happened can be applied to many areas of society - not just racial tolerance.
