The snake descends down the pyramid on the solstice / equinox. A day or two before and after as well. I never saw the snake myself, the clouds were in the way. Some fellow people in my tour van said they saw it after I left. I guess the snake was afraid to come out while I was there. Ha! See the effect here: World Mysteries - Kukulcan - Shadow |
Crowds waiting for the late afternoon sun and the friendly serpent to appear. Apparently, the big day was the next day. I was there on the equinox, I'm not sure why the next day was to have much larger crowds. About 5x - 6x more reputedly.

The Murra believe a spiritual "Rainbow Serpent" sleeps on the land and must never be awakened. ERA has erected vibration detectors near a recognised traditional site which will never be mined so that any disturbances can be monitored.
October 1999 - Kakadu Affair Shakes the Heritage World (UNESCO) - The Mirrars also consider the experience of the Ranger mine inconclusive. Although the Aborigines have received royalties, “the social situation in the region has not improved since the 1980s,” according to a 1997 survey commissioned by several of the parties involved in running Kakadu, including ERA. Unlike other Aborigine tribes who favour the mining, the Mirrars say it will turn their lives upside down and threaten their traditional subsistence economy based on hunting and gathering. They also stress that the site of the mine is a very sacred spot, one of the “Dreaming” places that are “dangerous” because disturbing them will have terrible consequences. “We are telling the truth,” says Margarula. “Non-Aborigine people often doubt the sincerity of our cultures. But this sacred site belongs to the Mirrars.”

2001 - NucNews - Obviously mining companies don't go out of their way to explain the
health hazards involved, but I think that this cross cultural
misunderstanding tells us more than that. Can we as scientifically
conditioned Westerners and Europeans take indigenous understandings of
uranium and radiation seriously? At Roxby Downs the Arabunna say there
is a sleeping lizard under the mine, other stories in Australia link
uranium to the rainbow serpent and the seven sisters who made the land.
If we value aboriginal view points then we have to consider these
interpretations along side all the scary scientific stuff.

has been going on at nearby Ranger (20km away) for a couple of decades.-
