Look Down Move

Book

Our Babies, Ourselves
by
Meredith Small

Great introduction to Ethnopediatrics. The study of parenting practices around the world. After reading this you may realize that more than a few of the so called parent experts,
have no clue as to what they are talking about.
We must learn from EACH OTHER!

Look Down Move

This is probably the #1 method of pride transmission. The Look Down Move (LDM) is exactly that, it is when others look down upon you causing you to feel inferior or special. Then you begin to build your pride inside to either 'fight off' this complex or glow in it. The first time this is often transmitted, is when parents look down on their children (Doting, spoiling, proud gaze,etc...) instead of treating them as equals / BEings.

Have you ever gotten a creepy feeling when someone looks down at you from a 2nd floor window? Parent or otherwise. Ever seen that in a horror movie? Imagine what a baby feels when (s)he is looked down upon by a parent, or a stranger, while pushing them in a stroller!!

In some countries of Africa, there is a tradition of making sure babies are always kept at eye level with the parent or grandmother. The book Our Babies, Ourselves is a great resource on this.
