Tikal
Largest Mayan site

Tikal Virtual Tour 360 views (Destination 360)

Visited in March 2006

Entrance sign. Sorry for the camera flash bouncing off the sign.
We arrived early - and were one of the first in the park.

The map clearly shows Tikal situated in the middle of the jungle.
A wonderful setting to throw your amateur archaeologist hat on!

A good example of the jungle swallowing up
the Mayan ruins over time.

Removing the debris gives an entirely different perspective.

Temple of the Jaguar I think. Or maybe I'm taking the photo from it.
Some people in the bottom center for scale.

More ruins in the main square.

The view from the top of one of the pyramids.
Several other pyramids pierce the forest canopy.

Scale model of the entire site near the entrance and souvenir shops.

 Chichen-Itza

Visited in March 2006 - It was a long day trip to the town of La Valladolid, Cenote Samul, and then the ruins of Chichen-Itza.
For this set - I thought it might be more interesting to include photos from other parts of the trip, as more
Chichen-Itza photos can be found in the SIGNS - 2006 section and online.

Just follow the simple directions!
Took a day long, small group trip from Playa del Carmen.

Indigenous Mayan clothing stall in La Valladolid, Mexico.
Notice the mother is NOT using a stroller!

Cenote (say-notay) Samul
Cenotes have spiritual significance to Mayans.

Above ground view of the tree.
The hole where the sunlight pours through is behind the low wall.

The sun is setting on our current way of life. It will be dark and confusing for a little while,
but what is to come will be many orders of magnitude - more GOOD.
We won't forget what is about to happen, because we will know
that it was a painful lesson we needed to learn.

And it's time to get off this rock and look around!
